    Nitrous on 3500?

    I'm about to buy a wet nitrous kit for my Fiero so I can run some good 1/4 mile times when i take it to the track in a couple of weeks.

    I've never worked with nitrous before but if a 3500 can take 12 psi of boost I would be surprised if it couldn't handle a 100hp shot of nitrous.

    I realize I'll need a purge solenoid but will I need a bottle warmer as well? Also, is it better to adjust the crank trigger to retard timing or should I burn a new chip? Is a 100 shot too much for a completely stock engine? Will I start slipping my clutch?

    Tank heater will help a good bit from what I read. As for slipping your clutch, well, that depends on your clutch. For spark, yeah, burning a new chip would be ideal. Heck, go on test and tune night and get it dialed in there if you have a wideband. There is a rule of thumb floating around that states a stock engine should be safe with an x% of total stock power output added with nitrous but I forgot what it was. Don't quote me on it but I want to say it was something like 30%, so on a 100hp engine you should be able to safely run a 30hp shot, 60 shot on a 200hp engine, ect., this being on an stock engine without any other kind of power adders. If you have a turbo on it (which I assume from your 12psi. comment) I wouldn't put a big shot on it, but a small one, like around 20hp to use it as a charge cooler instead of another power adder.

      No I don't have a turbo I was just referencing others who have boosted a stock 3500 without blowing up the motor

        Then I would imagine you could get away with it, especially since the nitrous wouldn't flowing as much as turbo engine would be in boost.

          The gains of nitrous for these motors dont seem to be as rewarding when compared to boost. Low boost verse up to a 100 shot is about when nitrous starts to become less desirable for end gains. I've netted over 400HP on boost with near stock internals and a very rich tune; I do not feel confident you could get the same numbers with nitrous unless you put in some serious parts and have a very good tune. Nitrous is pretty harsh when it hits... sure you could control the progressive rate, but it's still producing a super violent combustion event when it meets those pistons.

            Well I just ran a 13.686 with a 75 shot and I'm really happy with that time (it exceeded my expectations). No clutch slippage either with the stock 4 speed clutch.
