rebuilding a 3100, performance suggestions wanted.

Hello, I am going to be rebuilding a 3100 out of a grand am I recently purchased. I am going to be rebuilding the engine for my engine rebuild class. Depending on the condition of the engine (181,000 leaking anti freeze out the exhaust) I may just be doing a ring and bearing job. If I decide to go further what would be some good performance options for a fairly low price? Thanks.

    what year of 3100?

if its a pre 96 3100, put on the 96+ heads to utilize the factory 1.6:1 roller rocker arms. if its a 96+ just leave that as is.

port the cylinder heads. mill them a few thousanths for a bit more compression.

or install some higher compression pistons...

the only thing for the camshaft on a Gen3 engine right now is to get them reground by Crane or Crower.

upgrade the springs to the LS1 springs.

there's a few things you can do. not a huge aftermarket as per just off the shelf parts. but these engines are already putting out decent HP compared to the older 3.1L gen 2 versions.

also you can upgrade the Intake manifolds up to the larger runner style. and or also slap on a set of the larger intake valve heads from the 3400/00+3100.
