3100 timing gear or hd timing?

I was checking out jegs and I came across:

They both say they are for a small block chevy. Will these work on the 189 3100? Thanks.

No.

The cam and crank gears are larger for the SBC, plus you would need a different length ting chain, due to the cam being a longer distance away from the crank (center to center) on teh 660, as compared to the SBC. IIRC the difference was about 1 7/8".

The cam gear bolt pattern is the same between SBC and genI/II 660 cam. The crank snouts also share the same dimentions.

I looked extensivly into this to attempt to modify a SBC (or other application) timing belt, to work on a genI or II 660, so far I'm stillk at the idea stage, due to teh cost being prohitive t experimentaion at this point.

There is some good new however, Cloyes does make a direct fit timing set for the 660. It has received mixed reviews on this site alone, however.

I have used OEM replacment myself, I actually have the FWD (genII) set in my truck, which is narrower than the genI RWD (longitudily mounted) timing set, mix up at ordering, but has not failed so seemed to have any excesive wear. It is a Federal Mogul set.

I just used new factory gears/chain when I did my cam/topend swap. My factory parts had ~75k on them and still looked like they were in very good shape, so I didn't see why I shouldn't just repalce it with the same parts.

Although gear drive on a 660 would be pretty sweet.

The good old silent chain is always best. It stretches the lest and operates without fault. What do you think you are gonna gain for a gear or belt drive, honestly? Do you like replacing belts or perhaps the wine of straight cut gears wakes you up in the morning?

Kill then all, i got your back on this one, I would go for the straight cut gears...I think they sound sweet! But the timing set on the 3x00s is pretty solid, money is probaly better spent on something else

Also one thing to think about, with gear drive you can lose up to 8 hp at the wheels! so I don't think that it's worth it anyway

this like i said was a stock timing chain with 25,000 some Kilometers.. the timing chain gear that was put in Last summer in Sept the one that is pictured there New beside the old shit is Just as bad and needs replacement as well right now and it has only recieved 15,000 Km's at most maybe... Stock are shit, this will be #4 if i replace it again.

That's about how loose mine was after ~20,000 miles. I had used a Cloyes (sp?) stock replacement.

WTF. My Camaro 3.4L motor and My 2.8L S-10 were nothing like that. Both after more than 100,000 kms. I could have left it alone if I was cheep enough.

We just pulled Lloyds 3.1L out with 150,000 kms and it was nothing like that.

I'm sorry but that is just not normal. Is there maybe an end play problem with the crank? Perhaps the gears are out of alignment. That would acount for excessive chain wear. In millwright school we learn about alignment problems

I know its not normal. my original timing chain from the original engine way back when when torn down didnt look that bad and it was 200,000 kms on it.
customers cars that i work on all the time dont have issues. My feelings are the stockers are not supposed to be abused and used the way i put them through the paces.
The crank does not have any abnormal End Play.
what exactly do you refer to when you say "gears out of alignment" ?
meaning the distance from crank to cam gear? or something different?

LoL, nice chain Colin. THat's nothing compared to the chain that was in my old 3.1. I took the cover off and the chain was so stretched, I could take it and twish it almost 180* while it was still on both sprockets. That's what 120,000 miles on a stocker can do

Well for kicks run a machineists rule across the cam gear face down to the crank gear. See if it aligns. Maybe the thrust surface on the back of the cam gear is out of wack. Or perhaps the crank gear was not pressed on all the way. Just take a look-see. Next I would put a dial indicator on the cam gear face and check for run-out.

The crank gear was installed all the way. i should know i have installed all of them over hte years myself. and i always even ensure its fully seated.

I'll run the rule across If i tear into this thing over the winter while the car is apart. just to see if there is any out of whack-ness.. quite possible.

Ok, so what chain is the best?
I'll be changing mine this winter since I'll have the motor out again soon. It's got the Fed-Mogul stock replacement in it right now and has run fine thus far for years.
