  • Industrial art using recycled auto parts.

    Here's the first piece.

Made a clock out of a used timing chain. Wanted to leave it dirty for a rustic look, but it made welding difficult. Next time I will media blast the parts, weld, set it in the rain to rust, then clear coat it.

    Thoughts?

Lots of scrap lying around to make whatever. I think it would take a couple batteries to power a motor to turn the gear though:P

You should at least line up the timing marks.

So, are you planning on selling any of this? Or taking requests?

still haven't gotten around to making a lamp out of one of the old camshafts i got.

just gotta paint some numbers on the cam gear for the clock.

I'm truly ashamed of you, Brad! The gears are in fact in time, you should know as long as the crank gear is up, the cam gear can be up or down Every rotation of the crank gear changes the cam gear half a rotation.

I posted the first clock on FB and someone wanted it in a few minutes, so I made another. Sure, I'll take requests. Sometimes it's nice to be able to get the mind off things and be creative.

Crap, I was looking at the crank key, not the dot on the crank gear. I blame it on it being early...

What a damned cool idea... but will it lose 30 degrees of timing per annum if it is not set right for DLST? LOL (Sorry John...couldn't resist). On the extreme end of the Auto Industrial Art Scale though... Years ago... as I was turning north onto the I-275 ramp heading east to north from 5th Ave North down in St. Petersburg, Florida and suddenly I spied this huge, all metal Therapod-sized lizard perched on the roof of the St. Petersburg Municipal Maintenance Building. As depicted and looming large from the building top corner and made from old chromed city vehicle bumpers and damaged parts; this fully articulated crouching lizard had snaked out its tongue to snatch a primordial metal Dragonfly...right out of the air! Here is a link to some of the more exotic artistic exploits when using auto parts (Check out that crouching Alien Xenomorph!)

Made another clock for one of the members of our race team. He money shifted 5th to 2nd at the end of a long straight at approximately 125mph.

4th gear corner. Down shift, he pulled back the lever and was in 2nd, not 4th - popped the clutch and didn't realize what he did until it was too late.
