  • 3t40 and 3.1 LH0 onto a early 99 malibu L82

Hello folks - I have a 99 Malibu and a 91 Lumina, with the 99 having that dreaded camshaft death due to intake gasket leak. I would like to see if I could swap the 3T40 and the 3.1 LHO from the Lumina over to the 99 Malibu..

Will I need custom half shafts or can I source from a different GM truck/car?

Second Idea - Could the L82 swap into the 91 Lumina without significant re-work (I might rebuild the L82 over a weekend)?

Don't. Thats my thoughts on this. Rebuild an L82 with a broken cam over a weekend is not happening. If the cam broke, the cam bearing seized, and another bearing might not work at all. Just a waste of time considering the cost of 60V6s in general. Did the malibu trans blow up? Why swap it out? I would not put a 3 speed into anything unless it was already a 3 speed.

Putting a 3100 or 3400 into a 91 lumina will work but you will have to change the tune for it among other things. Fuel rail fittings, engine mounts, etc.

Acquired the 91 Lumina and 99 Malibu as salvage, paid nothing. Lumina needs fuel pump and an issue w/ reverse whereas the 99 Malibu has that trashed engine and a good auto transmission. If its a waste of time putting the 4T40-E into the Lumina, im all ears. The Lumina engine is good and I suppose I can rebuild the Lumina auto transmission sometime later.

You will have to swap the wiring harness for the 4T40-E, and then tune the computer to disregard all the missing parts the engine doesn't have. Custom axles maybe, not sure. I would put the 3.1 into the alero if that was what I had to work with. Id buy a 3100 or 3400 or maybe a 3500 depending on prices, if it was in the budget. Less hassle, better results.
