  • I am new to this site and my 88 formula

I saw these 2 packages and wanted to know what gains I might expect from this. This going to be my daily driven race car.

    1. 85-88 V6 PERFORMANCE CYLINDER HEAD SET
These heads have been pressure cleaned and magnafluxed to ensure they are free from cracks. Valve seats are cut to mate perfectly with the new SI stainless steel performance valves. The valves are held in place with Engine Works performance springs, and retainers, while hardened valve keepers keep everything in place. All surfaces have been machine to ensure flat smooth gasket surfaces and are ready to bolt on. Requires core charge 52862a. NOTE: Gaskets not included. Core charge #52862 must be added to each cylinder head set purchased. Refundable upon return of your old heads, provided that they can be rebuilt.

    $589.95 core charge is $200

    2. 87-88 V-6 PERFORMANCE ENGINE KIT
Engine kit includes: Probe forged pistons, Speed-pro plasma moly ring set, Cloyes roller timing chain kit, timing chain damper, performance valve springs, alloy retainers, hardened valve keepers, Crane cam and lifter set, complete gasket and seal set, high-volume oil pump, freeze plug set, cam bearings, rod bearings, and main bearings. This kit saves over $200.00 compared to buying each part individually. Please call to specify what size pistons/rings and bearings your engine requires. Check out the performance engine page for more components to make your V6 the perfect street performance engine.

What kind of racing are you doing?
Neither of these kits are going to make much power, but you will have an engine with great potential. The description of the heads don't mention if they've been ported, so I'll assume they aren't. SS valves are stronger, but won't help you make much power alone. The second group looks like its simply a rebuild kit. The only potential power makers are pistons and cam, but no CR or profile is mentioned. All this work is going to be very difficult to do quickly if this is your daily driver.

Don't forget: what kind of racing?

Stomp an import's ass type of racing .

I was thinking about rebuilding the engine and then get a blower but I might as well get a corvette engine and have a damn near bulletproof base for future mods.

Anybody have any better ideas or better yet cheaper ones that will yield me 300hp/300tq to the wheels?

If I were you I would scrap the 2.8L right now and start with a 3400 base engine. This will give you aluminum hi performance heads a full roller valvetrain and a very well breathing intake. With just the 3400 alone in a light weight Fiero you will spank alot of imports.

This will start you with a 200HP engine.... Go from there.

The 3.4 comes with hi performance heads stock?

Compared to iron heads, definetly. You can have the 3400 heads ported as well for better performance though. Stay away from the cloyes foller timing chain. I had to replace mine at 50k cause it was loose and i have no idea how long it was like that.

The 3400 is definetly a better start than the 2.8.

If he goes with the 3400, there is no aftermarket cam choices and it would require a lot of alterations to the mount structure as well as the electronics. I don't think you can get around swapping to DIS and swapping the ECM on the Fiero if you want to use the aluminum heads (Gen II or Gen III), but I would do a 3.1/3100 hybrid to avoid custom alterations to the motor mounts and you can get aftermarket flat tappet cams.

It is possible to work over the iron heads to get them to flow really well (At least as well as ported 3400 heads), but take a good deal of port work.

I dont know if the same porting on the iron heads to make them flow as well will really be good for NA though. I havent seen your heads but from your description its basically for boost only.

I know this won't help much, but I'll say it anyway.

If you're looking for HP out of a 2.8L Fiero V6, the easiest way is to insert a larger engine. In keeping with the 60 degree theme, a DOHC make the Fiero a little land rocket, along with the 90 degree 3800 supercharged, and most V8's of your choice. Turbo kits for the 2.8L are available, but unless you are a good DIY person, they get expensive. http://www.fiero.nl/cgi-bin/fiero/Ul...i?action=intro is a link to Pennock Fiero forum which has tons of transplant info. Good luck.

Yeah, Ben. I'm not sure how well they would respond to NA, since I'm boosted anyways. The exhaust ports are .25" larger in diameter over the stock, the short radius intake vane is gone as well as opened up a ton. I think flow wise, the intake was 229 cfm @ .5" lift and the exhaust was either high 190's or right at 200 cfm @ .5".

You want to make 300hp at the WHEELS...wow. I'm not saying its not possible, because it is, but it would be very difficult to get that much power out of a 60*. I would go with a Supercharged 3800, Northstar, or a 350 swap or something like that.

I also would probably post this on the fiero forum instead of here. They can tell you anything you need to know and then some.

I wasn't saying that we can't help out with his 2.8. I was saying that if he wants 300 wheel horsepower (which is like 380 crank hp BTW) he should go with a different engine, and for that he should go to a fiero forum because they can, will, and have swapped everything imaginable into a fiero.

Well, as for that, the only choices out of the box for 300 crank HP would be a Northstar or a SBC. I have been in SBC conversion Fieros and not only was I not all that impressed, they seem to handle like crap. If you did a V8 conversion, I would say an LS1 engine or something similar, all aluminum to keep that weight down. The SBC iron block motors are just too heavy, even the northstar is 100 lbs heavier than the stock iron head 2.8 (and for God's sake, don't use the 4T80E, it weighs at least 300). I know a lot of people go "But the extra weight in the rear helps with traction." Well, yeah, but it also makes the car dangerous for steering since the Fiero is already light in the front end. I also wonder about cooling. The stock 2.8 had cooling issues sometimes already and what does adding twice the displacement to the car do to that? I've never heard Fiero guys talk about cooling mods, but I'm sure they are necessary.

I wasn't sayin I want to make 300/300 out of my 2.8 but I just wanted about that ouput as cheap as possible. Should I do a build a 3.1 hybrid and juice it? v8 swap? 3800S/C? or build the hell out of my 2.8 juice it?
