  • Gen III hybrid info needed....

Ok I have been reading a lot about the hybrid top end swap and I only have a few remaining questions. Here is what I've got. a 95 monte carlo engine. Heads from a 2000 malibu 3100 and the intake U/L plus throttlbody and exhaust system from a 02 buick 3100.Now the question.
When I put the new heads on which set og push rods do I use.My existing 95 3100 set or the set that came with the malibu heads?I am fairly new to the forum so I am unfamilar with the P&P offerings from forum memebers. Thanks for the help.

Its a bit confusing as to what you are exactly doing. Are you swapping this all onto a GEN2 or 1 block? or are you refering to using the 2000 heads on the 95 3100 block?

you cannot use the GEN3 pushrods in the hybrid (gen3 top end on either 1 or 2 block) in either case. All gen3's use a Roller camshaft, which makes the pushrods too short compared to our older flat tappet cams.

If you are using the 2000 heads on the 95 3100 use the pushrods and rockers from that 2000 engine.

I have to double check the lengths betweent the 94-95 Stamped rocker pushrods and the Roller Tip rocker Pushrods to ensure they are the same length. I would just take the pushrods and rockers from that specific set of heads.

Technically this isnt a "hybrid" which is why it seemed confusing. What we refer to as a Hybrid is the Gen3 Top end on a gen2 (or 1 for that matter) block.

I guess i\I was confused on that. I figured that out in your last post when you asked if it was on a gen 1 or 2 block. Either way I still should get bit more out of the engine. So I should just reuse the 00 head push rods with the roller valve train and I should be all set? What do you think th HP pickup will be if I dont change the cam and just settle for a better breathing engine.
Thanks for the help.I am shooting for 200hp am I close?

Cam hasn't changed since 94, and there are no aftermarket cams available. 200hp? Nope... the highest a stock 3100 has is 175, therefore just upgrading the top end will pretty much max you out there.

Your only gonna increase power by a small amount. However you should easily notice it. I believe the push rods are the same length but either check before you intall or use the ones from the roller rocker heads

Using stock parts, nope. I would imagine with ported intake manifolds and heads, it would be close. Tuning the computer afterwards would probably get it pretty solid on the 200 crank hp. You should get the cam done though, unless you are waiting for comp to make new cams vs the regrinds that are available now. The computer is another key issue as well, since the stock computers don't do engine mods much justice. Are you dropping this into a fiero?

Yes I have an 88 coupe with a 5spd that I am putting it in. I intend to use the 730 computer and have it customize. Are the regrinds as good as the one that comp will be making? I really would like to get to 200-210 if not a little more. Well if the 2000 3100 top end is equal to the 3400 and that is putting out 185 is the difference displacement at that point?Must be...

Yeah, its the displacement, and the 185s I believe are in the vans which have different exhaust manifolds. No one knows the comp cams specs, or results yet so its very hard to say. I would hope they can do a better cam than the regrind, but regrinds are pretty cheap so bang for the buck may be harder for comp to compare to. All up in the air at this point.

730 computer would be excellent for tuning the gen 3.

I have a set of exhaust manifold that are the same as the ones the vans use that I intend to use for the swap also.Who offers the regrinds right now? I might have to add that to the budget.I would definitely need new pushrods with a regrind right?

Crane cams, and Crower are both able to do Regrinds. Yeah you should get new pushrods with the regrind as they take material off the base circle of the cam which leaves extra clearance and reduces the preload on the hyd lifters.
a custom length set would be needed.
