  • Creaks, Squeaks and Groans: front suspension fix

When I go over large bumps I hear a squeak out of the drivers side front. My list of suspects include sway bar bushings. I replaced with poly bushings years ago and haven't greased since. Could be dry but I might just go back to the rubber bushings.

Can it be bad struts? They're KYB replacements and about 10 yrs old. What about the giant rubber bushing in the shock tower? Prone to wear or movement that could cause squeaking?

Another noise is a slight popping when I am stopped but turning the wheels. It's not that loud but sometimes I can feel it slightly. I'll inspect tie rods and balls joints. Do the bearing plates for the springs wear? Anything else to check? I have new rubber bushings for the control arms that I never got around to installing, a possible source.

Front end is also lowered (ST Springs). Had I not recently had an alignment I'd put the stock springs back. I still may. I like the look but with speed bumps routine, a lowered car makes life harder.

The squeek could probably be any of the things you mentioned. I'm guessing the popping noise is the bearing plates. Mine do they same thing, but unlike yours its loud as hell. Gets the attention of any bystanders nearby. It doesn't really hurt anything so I haven't bothered to change them.

    P.S.

I used to have ST springs. They sucked ass. I'm now running FE3 springs with one coil cut off. It's not as low as it was with the ST's, but it handles better and OMG does it ride so much nicer now. I ran those ST's for the first 2-2.5 years I had the car, and if I'd known what the difference would be, I would have ditched them immediately.

be sure to check your cradle mounts .. if your car does not have the factory recall reinforcement kit if can cause a popping sound but its more often on hard take offs and standing turns.

What does the cradle mount kit/fix look like? I've had my cars over 10 years and this is the first I've heard of a cradle mount recall.

couldn't find a pic through a part supplier, but it popped up on W-body.com

so, i guess if you can still read the part numbers off, you'll know if you have the updated version. otherwise, i have no idea what the original looked like.
