i say the best gm v6 ever made. not the best gm motor....hands down the sbc 350 has that crown. not sure about the best motor ever either. can't really give an opinion on that since i am so biased towards gm. if anything the lq1 is UNDER-RATED. who voted the heaviest v6?? id say the all iron 4.3 has it beat :P
I would add "highly underrated" because none of the other's really get it right. The 3800 is a better V6 engine like it or not for its old tech approach. (more reliable, smoother, has extensive aftermarket, proven itself over and over, and is still a couple LBS lighter (or is it?))
4.3 is probably heavier then the LQ1, and I don't think this innovative engine gets the credit it deserves. So that pretty much crosses out all the options.
For me, this engine is all about the heads. Look at the ports and combustion chambers, and you realize you have to be stupid not to think it could make alot of power!
i am inclined to agree on alot of those points except the 3.8 being better. it just has more stuff for it. like the lq1, i think the 4.3 was underdeveloped. if proper attention was paid to this motor, i think it could have surpassed all of gm's v6's. too bad gm didn't chop off a set of high flow heads with the 350 block for the 4.3.
as it was told to me by a guy that does nothing but race motor/headwork all day. the 96-97 heads i gave him could support 300 n/a whp as they sit. but as we all know to get those numbers, many streetability compromises would have to be made.
pretty sure the same can be said for the 91-95 heads.
This is the most replies I have ever got from a post
the new VVT engines look f-in cool. but I think that for it's day the LQ1 was advanced. As far as the 3.8 is concerned, I think the LQ1 is better b/c of the ponies it put out compared to a larger engine, plus I love the high RPM's. Stick a good turbo on a 3.4 and I think it will out perform a SC 3.8.
As far as best engine ever.....Has to be Rolls Royce V16 or whatever because that thing was just a monster.
Best V6....Maybe a Porshe 3.6 with 355hp, or is that a strait 6?
Whatever, just having fun. I hadn't seen much action on the DOHC section for a couple days...
95 MC Z34 Black
Running strong with new engine, transmission, brakes and suspension.
to be honest, i think the fiero boards and mymonte are more active in DOHC discussions. There are so many more pushrod owners on here that I am guessing people outside our site here look at us like we dont care about the dohc or something. I dunno. Doesn't help that there isn't much new right now with the motor. This year i was hoping to have an intake made but things came up with my shop partner and no welder...so it hasn't happened yet. Now im doing pushrod flow research to prove/disprove my theories. I will do the same with the DOHC but its a fact that the pushrods are a larger market and i wont survive (literally) without that business.
I own a dohc, so it will happen, just takes time. Im just 1 person.
I think that the new 4.2l Vortec I6 engine might make a run for the best engine that GM ever made. It puts out 275 horses and a little more torque. The powerband is supposedly consistent all they way through. In addition, it's an ULEV engine.
On top of that, it's an aluminum block and much lighter than the 3.4l DOHC! :P
being a surfer of both i would agree and disagree. the monte boards mostly have the repair faqs and the same performance questions with the same answers. they have nothing on 60v6.
the lq1's on the fiero boards, unfortunately only occupy a very small percentage of the owners present but what they lack in numbers they make up for in the quality of information. b/c 99% of the dohc/fiero owners are technically proficient. they have to be to get the motor in the car to begin with . there are more dohc owners and alot more general/performance dohc info on here. IMO the fiero boards and this one are a tie.............for now.
i think next year will prove to be exciting b/c i think there are also alot of fiero owners are getting serious about modding their lq1 platformed fiero's instead of just talking about it. there is an invisible line drawn dictating what some1 wants done vs what they are willing to spend to get it done. i forsee more and more dohc owners crossing this line and when they do there will be some real interesting shit coming out.
also probably more peeps on here may be getting inspired by timg's efforts. it is one thing to say the motor will do this, this and this. but another altogether to show some1 what it DOES do vs what it can do.
Im still pissed Im trapped in an apartment, and my engine is on the other side of the country... well till I get a house or a garage of some sort. Plans for my 3.4 DOHC are on hold, but I still have parts coming in all the time
Huh, heavy? Check this out... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GMC_V6_engine Note: They are 60 degree engines. I'd venture to say 478 is the heaviest. Shit, they even made a 60 degree V8, 637 cubes.
If you are driving a Chevy, everything else, is just a blur. 3.4 Carbon Footprint.
