If you tap it and it sounds hollow, or it rattles, then its bad. Symptoms include lack of power and hesitation.

It will also rattle when running, and it is very noticeable... probably more so on mine because of my flows... run it while it's on a lift (if available) and listen to it, you should be able to hear the rattle.

sometimes they just clog up and dont break up. You would see it heating up and glowing red most likely if that is the case.

Ben's right, I've seen them heat up red too, extremely red. Don't get a clogged cat converter confused with a bad O2 Sensor. A bad sensor may eventually cause a clogged converter. I always replace the sensor when I replace a cat converter. If you have 2 O2 sensors, then I'm not so sure if you need to replace one or both or either.

the best way to tell if your cat is bad, is to get an thermometer (perforably infrared). Then take the temp at the front and then the rear of the cat. compare the temps. you should be about 100degrees higher in the rear than in the front. check it, the temps don't lie!!!!
