    My cam thread comes back

    I figured i would share.

After giving up on CHRFAB b/c alan is pursuing larger ambitions, I called in to get my stuff back, I actually got ahold of him.

We talked about the cam project and since it was so close to completion we decided to go through with it.

He already had my headflow charts from my ported heads and basically discussed what I wanted as far as the characteristics and he will work out the details.

as far as what i wanted was maximize hp in the high range and to maximize tq in the midrange.

I also told him I wanted a good idle and want it all to be bolt-on.

i told him of the lift limitations and i am going to let him have at it.

Another thing to note is since alan isn't really pursuiing the business like he was, he told me who does his cam work.

Guy named steve long and from what i understand, he has ground lq1 cams before so that is another plus.

well see how it goes b/c it will surely be a while before everything is completed. on top of the cam work i am having my cam housings polished too.

I have a set of the cams that Steve Long has made. All of them have gone into Fiero's so far and so will this set. The current design works very well in a light Fiero but may not work the best in a heavier w-body. Do yourself a favor - skip the middle man and go straight to him. He will work with you very well and will grind you a set for pretty cheap. If you want changes just talk to him and I'm sure he will be willing to work with you on coming up with a new set.

i googled it and came up with (951) 273-0816.

me and alan discussed that and asked me what my car weighed so hopefully they will consider that when grinding the cams.

I know you've seen this, but for those of you who haven't:

          http://www.fiero.nl/forum/Forum1/HTML/064798.html

Read towards the end - page 3. 230whp after tuning with very few other mods. N* throttle body and Underdrive pulley I believe were the only other mods that would increase power, and even those wouldn't be a very significant increase (of course the newer intakes, but I don't count that as a mod since that came factory on these engines). From what I've heard, I think stock 3.4's dyno around 170 whp? Pretty significant gains...

Why would an UDP and larger TB not be significant increase? The newer intakes are good for more HP and you are comparing to older intake engines from what I can tell. Not knocking the cams, but you are belittleing everything else to make them look better IMO.

UDP is what - 5hp MAX?? Your right about the throttle body I didn't mean to make it sound like that wasn't an increase, but it's pretty clear here that the cams are the big increase there. Like I said I'm not sure what a stock 3.4 puts down but I think its around what I said. Can someone please post what a stock 3.4 actually does? What do the newer intakes engines put down?? I can't imagine it's that much more considering they were only rated for like 5 hp more from the factory. I think an increase that large is very good and is probably one of the best mods you can do for this engine - naturally asperated, and in a lighter car hooked up to a 5 speed of course, not really sure how they would perform in a w-body escpecially with an auto...

EDIT TO ADD- The car in the link I posted is not mine.

A tuned OBD1 setup with the newer intakes will do more than an OBD2 3.4 DOHC. Pushrods get more than 5 whp out of an UDP and the gains increase as you spin it faster. Michael at FFP had 219whp with his 96 intake, larger TB, UDP, and stock cams retimed. This with the 5 speed.

Wow. That's very impressive! I still think these cams are very worth while but damn I never knew about that.

Do you have a link to a thread or dyno chart for this?

It would be nice to compare the 2 charts to see the real differences...

                        i have a 5 spd btw.

my ultimate goal is to get it to about 3150 lbs. Which i think is about 450 more than a fiero with a 3.4 dohc in it.

unfortunately i do not think i will be able to accurately guage the results b/c i have quite a few other mods.

1/4 mile my gp would not stand up to a lq1 fiero but my emphasis isn't on the 1/4. if it was, i would have swapped a l67 in it and slapped a turbo on.

So does anyone have any proof that he ran those numbers? I'd really like to see that chart if anyone has it...
