3.1 TBI - how long will it last contest

    the vehicle: 1990 lumina apv

the engine: 3.1 iron head TBI. one burned exhaust valve, 138k miles, has 4 quarts of 80/90 gear oil and 1 of 5/30 motor oil

the contest: tell me how long it will last in seconds or minutes + seconds before ceasing to run

how it will be run: engine will be started up cold, foot will be put to floor until engine blows up.

winner gets nothing, i just figured it would be fun to guess. unfortunately my camera doesn't do sound or i would record the event.

So the gear oil is in place of motor oil, correct?

If so, I give it 4 minutes, assuming it has a rev limiter. If no rev limiter, 33 seconds.

I think the lifters will be their own rev limiters. Not sure how the thicker oil will keep them from pumping up, but valve float will probably be your mechanical rev limiter.

        I give it 2 minutes 43.5 seconds.

I assume you will keep you foot to the floor until everything stops moving? No wussing out when one rod punches through the block and coats the cat with oil, starting the van on fire? Might want to just put a brick on the gas pedal, start it up, and run. Please find someone (neighbor, anyone) with a camcorder....this should be good.

If you don't get it on tape, then there is no sense in doing it at all. It BETTER be on tape!

my sister ran it down to 1 quart of oil, then proceeded to dump in my gallon jug of gear oil cause she picked it up and doesnt know the difference.

i'll call around and see if someone has a digital video camera with sound before i do it.

#1 reason = i'm sending it to the junkyard, the only close one that will take it free of charge is assholes and screwed me, so i make sure no parts they get are good when they take something away. the last thing i had them take, i put screws and nuts down the throttle body and started it up till they broke things. plus i've never intentionally blown anything up so it might be fun. i'll keep my foot in it till it stops running, and will have a fire extinguisher handy.

Ditto! Won't blow, maybe lock-up. You will never top out the revs to "Blow" it.
