Where did anyone mention a fridge or electric compressor anywhere in this thread?

Allow me to lend a hand to this thread, as I am an HVAC technician, and have some knowledge to share.
The BEST way to do this is using liquid nitrogen or CO2 stored in a bottle that can be released on demand, is cheap to replenish, won't use a powered compressor, and won't garner you a nice fine from the govt.

You could use a 24oz paintball co2 tank with the correct fittings attaching to a manifold and solenoid to release on demand.

You could also just setup a nitrous fogger for an a/a intercooler. My friends Audi has this setup

still takes power to run, this time though, from the alternator.

that's what the car in the thread linked to did, we were just discussing using the a/c system because it could maintian the cold indefinitely, where-as a CO2 based system has to be recharged because it's open loop.

how would you get a fine from the gov? it's still a closed system.

My point was eliminating the need for a belt at all.

Ya the question still remains how much more power it would take to drive the alternator in that case

Obviously it probably wouldn't be worth it to ADD a/c to a car for this purpose but if your car already has it, it could be worth checking into.

the trick would be to see if you could make both functional, probably not going to work at the same time, but maybe have a valve system to turn off one or the other?

heh, I know with my car if the AC is on, the condenser gets hot and the fans blow the hot air right at the UIM. I can see the temp rise in the UIM, since that's where I have the IAT monitored. Which, btw is the drawback to have cooling fans kick in lower than stock setting. Not for nothing have I a hood scoop lol

A compression-expansion refrigeration system only works if the fluid is being pumped by a compressor. If you were to store the liquid refrigerant in a receiver, and release it into an evaporator near your intercooler, the heat absorber would very quickly overwhelm the parts involved and probably crack/explode, unless your compressor was running, which would rob you of about 20% of your power.

Furthermore, as all closed loop refrigerant circulate oil with the gas, you'd end up cooking the oil, which would fry your compressor in short order.
If you were to use an electric compressor, you'd have to run a pretty big compressor, and an even bigger alternator, which again, when loaded is going to rob power.

Can't break the 2nd law of thermodynamics my friend.

I think you're misunderstanding what we are talking about, we are talking about running refrigerant through an A2w intercooler instead of water. basically turning the intercooler into a big evaporator.

you are right about the 2nd law.

I've seen this sort of setup on imports, but instead of a fogger nozzle they had a ring with holes in it mounted in front of the ic.

I think he understands the idea, but thinks it can't work in practice.

I think it is possible, but would involve modifying the core and the way the refrigerant is distributed in it as it evaporates, and maybe a different refrigerant (or oil). The compressor would not necessarily need to run the short time duration of boost for drag racing or the street. Build up pressure off-cycle, release it during boost. If I had the time to research it as a clean slate build, I would, it is an interesting concept.
