something inside def broke, and sounds like around cyl #1 pulled the starter and turned the flywheel bout 1/4 turn backwards and heard some chunks of something falling, put a breaker bar on the crank and turned it back forward to hear scraping and grinding for bout 1/8 of a turn before it stoped again....

gona pull the engine out this weekend and hopefully figureout what happened

might get lucky and just have been a chain? *crosses fingers*

      Ouch,

I hope it's something simple, easy, and cheap.

It's not sooo bad. I got mine out in a little over 4 hours, but I had to wait a fair amount for the front end loader. Much easier than pulling Vortec heads from a van. A battery powered sawzall would've cut the time down considerably. Is it too early to start my X-mas list?

Yeah, that's how I got mine out. I wanted to keep all the exhaust manifolds and everything so it'd be a lot easier if you don't care about that stuff. You do need to clear a little extra space because a front end loader is much more of blunt a instrument than a hoist. The one 3500 had 1/2 the front end missing, that might be a help or a hurt depending on if the wreck blocked bolts or removed stuff in the way.

Very cool. I'd offer to help but there's just too much I need to get done this weekend. Happy wrenching.
