5 speed locked up
My brother and I did a 3400 and 5 speed swap on his 89 z24 convertible. The trans is out of a 92 z24. We put an autozone clutch in it to get him by and it lasted for a while, but would grind once in a while going into gear like it wasn't fully disengaging. So, we clocked the forks one tooth more this time and it was great.. Except 3rd gear. It wouldn't grab third very good. Lastnight on his way home from class, he was shifting from fourth into fifth and the shifter went over to the left- the 1st and 2nd shift gate area and stayed in neutral. And it's locked in that area. It can be moved in or out of the car(under the hood). We trailered it home lastnight and are just trying to figure out what happened. We've never heard of this happening before.

There is around 150,000 on the trany its self, 800 miles on the clutch and thow out bearing, new fluid in the trany when clutch was changed...old didn't look that bad. And by not grabing third gear, we mean it wasn't there about 50% of the time.Comment

pop the shift cable ends off the arms on the trans and have him move the shifter around.. i bet you have a bad cable.
the 3rd gear thing is normal, the 3rd syncro is crap in HM282/NVG trannies.Comment

I can check the cables in the morning. So when i try to shift into third and there is no gear there at all...nore grinding, just an empty slot, this is normal?Comment
