1.6 Rocker Arm Issues

I was reading through a thread;

In that thread, someone said that certain year 3.1MPFI's could not use or had to have something changed due to the stud threads.
I would really like to know what would need to be changed to make 1.6 ratio rocker arms to work. I know the guides need to be checked, but other than that, what else has to be altered? Could a local hardware store washer take care of the gap?

Any 3.1L with a shouldered stud (found on any net last rocker system from GM) needs to convert back to adjustable 10MM studs found on early aluminum head motors and all iron head motors. Any of these studs will do

But please not that this only applies to Comp Cams Magnum roller tip rockers. All other 1.6 rockers on the market use a 10MM to 3/8"conversion stud made by ARP or Crane.

So will valve lash need to be done? So 2.8MPFI's has what I am looking for?
I thought these were suppose to be 99.9% bolt on and go.

I used my stock 91 3.1 rocker studs with the stock nut. I may have had a washer now that I think about it.

If you could, could you tell me what washer (Thickness) did you use?
Was it a normal hardware store washer or "special" order washer?

I no longer have the 3.1 engine so I can't verify that I even had washers. I don't remember buying any though. See if the thickness of the ball is different on the stocker compared to the comp ball.

The bearing (half moon) is the same.

I am going to go see about pulling some 2.8MPFI (off any 2.8 equipped car) studs and see where that lands me. If it doesn't work, then stock rockers are going in.
I wouldn't feel safe with 'washers' in my engine. If they wanted washers in there, the package would have came with them.

it hink that the 1.6ers will sit lower on the stud.
i had problems with them when i put them on my 2.8
i had converted over to the adjsutable studs, and used the guides underneath
and for some reason they tend to slip off the top of the valve.

This is for a 3.1MPFI. Like I said, I am going to go grab some 2.8 studs (That is what people are saying to do) . If it doesn't work, then I guess the 1.6's will have to go back. There's no ifs or buts about it.

Would the 1.52 rockers give the same problem as the 1.6's?


The information I need to know is, what do I need to make these 1.6 rockers work correctly for my fwd 3.1MPFI engine?

I Did give you the right answer. You can try the stock studs. The only issue is wether or not you get the right preload. No big deal if you don't just convert to 2.8L studs. Once you do you can adjust for proper preload.

Thats all you need to be concerned about.

I think this kind of info is needed in the 60*v6 store for the 2.8/3.1 parts.

you can buy the studs at most parts stores pretty cheap. Just ask from some for something like a 84 S-10 2.8L.

Rocker Arm Stud for a 1984 Chevrolet Truck S10 2WD 18.00 a set. I am going to order these unless someone knows why I should not.
