      Thanks for all the info, everyone. I'm still debating whether I want to repair the engine in situ or pull it, drop in a junkyard engine to get it running, and rebuild the stock unit on the side. If I go the rebuild route, I'm gonna wanna go the upgrade route with the 2000+ heads and intake, but I'll make another thread if I get to that point.

      The only snag I seem to be running into on the parts front is whether this engine has stamped or roller rockers. I'm sure I'll find out when I pull a valve cover, but is there any way to know without tearing into it?

          Find the cap that says 710 and look in there. You could probably get a peek at part of a rocker over the valve.

              It would appear I have stamped rockers. However, that doesn't seem to help me with parts selection. All the gasket sets I've seen say "with pushrod guides" and "without pushrod guides". Which one do I need?

                Stamped rockers need pushrod guides. Roller rockers stay aligned via notches in the pedestal, therefore the guides aren't needed.
