Why not just stick with the original plan of making a VVT delete or over ride to lock the stock cam at the proper or neutral straight up position and go from their, leaving the ability to restore the original setup in the event someone gets the needed information for a stand alone controller to operate it.

Truth be told, until it is run as is there is no way of knowing for sure that loss of the VVT will only result in a small loss of top end or bottom end power if locked half way between its full range. The stock cam can be reground to help and I thought I recalled someone have a cast iron roller cam made which is cheaper for experimental purposes. The two stage intake nets a few horsepower up top so basically locking it in the high output range is feasable for performance.

Now that my project is on hold for a wile I'll be certain to save for the 3.9 swap and will try to locate the engine with cylinder select since it is an apparently simple system operated by on off hydraulic pressure to special lifters at pistons 1,3 and 5. Bolted to the 6 spd tranny that I nearly have worked out I imagine it could achieve unreal gas mileage and still have the ability for substantial power output with the turbos.

You guys should also look into the 6 spd since it has already been fitted to a fwd car and the OE shifter mechanism from the G6 is already positioned correctly to accomodate it.

No. HP is not dependent on bore size or displacement. The longer stroke does generally create more low-end torque. I'm not in search of ground stomping power off idle. I also would like to do something unique. A large bore, short stroke engine would be very neat. The price of custom pistons are discouraging though.

I have 3 engines that were free. I'm pretty much just doing a rebuild, cam regrind, and port work. Then I'm going to turbocharge it.

Thanks for all the comments guys. I appreciate all the help. I'm going to teardown the 3100 soon and see how it is. Hopefully it just needs a little freshing up.

ask on sites like www.g6performance.com and other places that support the cars these engines come in

For all you guys who are into the short strokes.... why not use a LZ4 3500? It has a 99 bore, 76 stroke, steel crank, LS style heads, forged rods, oil squirters and has over 210 hp stock. Seems like a good starting point to me.

hmmm.... 3400, 2.8 crank and 3500 top end? 11:1 c/r? cammed? that would sound wicked.... makes me wanna do it for a daily driven terror n/a malibu

Sharkey, yup, that's cool. Half of me wants to go the easy route, 3400, turbo, and be done with it, the other half wants to go unique. I've thought that if you could get a 3900 with at least the stock HP that would be one fun street motor. That motor N/A in your car with 6spd would be brutal!

Someone should do a short stroke gen3 or gen2 w/gen3 top end. A 3100 bigbore/shortstroke would be cool IMO. Put 3500 heads and intakes, headers, high comp pistons (or boost), and let it roar!

You should just build a trueleo like intake and not even waste time on the 3.4 intake cause it only flows like 25 cfm more than the fiero intake. I was only looking for a power curve that was why I asked for dyno graph. Your right in my case I didn't try at all...why...when I had my intake welded for $130.00. I like to design performance parts. This is the main reason I like these forums cause wee all have the same goals with a million paths...gotta learn something. I see the reason for the high revs...I run nitrous so I make power as soon as I want it.

Stock 3400 will keep making power to 6800+ with a cam, compression, and larger throttle body.

generaly a long stroke motor doesnt like to rev as much being the piston speed is much higher as opposed to a small stroke.

i built mine with oldschool in mind, however if i ever blow it up ill start working on the 3900/6 speed swap with custom intake and a non vvt cam, ported heads, high compression, headers, ect. see how much it would take to get 300hp n/a from it. sure a turbo 3400 would be cool and all, but its been done. i tend to walk the path less traveled, if ya know what i mean.

Sharkey In that light weight car you could really be fast with a 3400 or 3500 though hmmm.. Still, old school can be cool...

2800 I like it. Or how about a 3400 with a 2.8 crank, making a 3100 big bore? Either way, with a larger bore, short stroke, and the high flow of the gen3, it should be a very fast reving NA motor! Turbo would be even better of course!

Doesn't bigger bore = more HP and stroke more Tq? In that case that's good cause we usually have a ton of wheel spinning torq anyways.

i have around 10 hours porting in the middle and upper intake. i know everyone says the fiero intake is garbage and wont allow it to rev that high, and its a gigantic restriction. all i have to say is those guys arent trying hard enough. now granted even with all my work it still isnt the most ideal, thats why i will likley be modding a 3.4 camaro intake whe i boost it, or ill be building an intake simular to the trueleo short runner.

i dont have dyno graphs, i dont dyno my stuff, i rely on how it performs on the track. most people perfer dynoing, but we dont race on the dyno now do we. although om able to roughly tell were my peak power is from my ve tables. the motor is wanting the highest amount of fuel at 6300 and it starts dropping a bit after that, but not all that much. even though peak power may be 6300 (or roughly there), it still pulls hard up to 7k, and the big reason for reving that high is when i shift it drops me to around 4000rpm, and thats were the motor is realy starting to pull hard, so it works out quite well.

What is the purpose of trying to make power past 7k?

Sharkey no offense but I find that very hard to believe because the intake you have in the pic is the same as the fiero intake and no matter what all have done they have not made that intake flow good at all past 4500rpms. Do you have a dyno graph? I would like to see your power curve. That intake is the exact reason I made my dual throttle body intake.

Sharkey, thanks for your input. If you can make power at 7k with your setup, a genIII should have no problem. I think the most limiting factor is the cam. With a nice cam and some boost it should have no problem making power past 7K. I just hope the tranny can take it.
