IM getting ready to drop a fresh GM 2.8 shortblock into my 85 fiero GT and need to get a cam for it. I wondered if anyone here has used any aftermarket cams and which one worked well as far as extra power with the stock computer. I dont want to get into a new chip and etc. just looking to optimize whats there. If the stock fiero gt cam is the best option I will go with that. looking to stay with a hyd. flat tappet cam. thanks for any help!

I wouldn't use the word optimize in regards to using the stock tune, as it is not optimal on a stock cam, let alone any other cam. If you want the best cam for the stock tune, something around a 260 grind is going to work best. WOT-Tech has the ability to spec a cam for any application, including bone stock, and John has done some flat tappet cams in the past. He goes by ForcedFirebird on here. If you want a shelf cam, I can get the comp 252 grind is probably the closest available. That is going to be the best possible cam for the stock tune however.Ben

Don't waste time on the 252, I'd at least do a 260 for a shelf cam, but a custom cam is going to be better. If you don't mind doing some extra machine work, there's more lift to be had than .440" as well (260 cam is 260/260 .440/.440)

thanks FF was looking at an ISKY 262 cam that seemed like it would work but wasn't sure if the computer would freak out with it. I dont want to get into any machine work and etc. just wanted a little more over stock. will probably mill the heads when I get the valves done for a little more squeeze and I might do a bowl cleanup port job too. I just cant bring myself to ever put a totaly stock engine in anything.

I'm not 100% on this but can't you use the 94-95 3100 rockers which are the 1.6 ratio in that motor to gain lift ?

Buy the COMP 252 or 260 K kit and some Magnum 1.6:1 roller tip rockers and call it a day. I could not be more satisfied with a single product I put on my Trooper!1993 EXT. CAB, 3.4L V6 TBI, 5spd manual. Sonoma

Your ECM will run fine with a 262, but it will be better if you put a new chip in it to take advantage of the better breathing.
It has been done. You have to shave off the bottom of the pedestal, Joseph Upson did it a few years back. Really unnecessary since there's 1.6 rockers available as a direct fit.Originally posted by Mars View PostI'm not 100% on this but can't you use the 94-95 3100 rockers which are the 1.6 ratio in that motor to gain lift ?

Yup. The Comp 260 is what I would go with. We can get them even though they aren't listed on the WOT-Tech store, for a competitive price.Originally posted by betterthanyou View PostBuy the COMP 252 or 260 K kit and some Magnum 1.6:1 roller tip rockers and call it a day.
