I'm not pushing big power yet, but I will be very soon, so I don't want to play games with a elcheapo timing set.

Hot cam with more aggressive ramp, more lift, stronger springs, higher cylinder pressures against the exhaust valve.......not having a DRTC is what held me back on the turbo cam.

I agree, these engines are the type that will impact valves/pistons if that cheapo chain fails.


I can't invest in one yet but if the group buy is still coming together after the new year (tax time), count me in for sure. I would LOVE to have a DRTC. That would open up the turbo cam option.

it is a lot of money for these but the cost of repairing a failed stock chain, smashing pistons into valves......i don't want to think about it, lol.

once i replaced the tensioner pulley it made mine stop sounding like it had rod knock lol that was the stock virtually brand new tensioner i got with the 300 mile motor. didn't last that long, maybe 8 months of daily driving and then the rest was post cam install.

The way I look at it, is the stock setup is 180 from Ben...

forgot what i paid for my GM setup. i got all my stuff through gm parts direct a few years back and it was something around $150 IIRC. so $250 for some custom made gears and what not doesn't sound too bad to me.

The way I look at it, is the stock setup is 180 from Ben... Then send out for Cryo... and right now it looks like I've been able to run that setup since 2009 till now Not much mileage though. SO to get something that would last longer than that, I'm willing to pay over 250 for. Especially since when the chain wears out you can buy a new one very easily and with this setup you will hopefully not experience wear on the gears due to the chain design.. vs the stock type of chain.

Maybe it will quiet down my motor some too... lol

it's kinda hard to compare a custom set to something that is mass manufactured.

Mostly me thinking out loud, sorry. I don't mean to jack the thread. The 250 range would be easier for me to justify. Don't count me in yet though.

I haven't personally had issues with the stock one. My weak point lies within the cv joints but the added security is certainly welcomed. Cryo treated would be icing on the cake.

Original kits came with a depth gauge so you knew how much to remove. Just needed a straight edge to check it against and then machine away.

I will probably do that with mine as well.

Yeah just a verification on the price would be great... I don't remember the original sets selling for that much so I would hope that was just a guesstimate. IIRC they were around 250, so I could completely understand 300 or so.

Also what's his target number of interested buyers?

And yes I will probably send this set out for cryo treatment as well.

Mfuller I did that clearancing by hand using an angle grinder and I only ground deep where the chain was going to run. I would check it and find where it was rubbing by turning the motor over and then clearance more... As well as I used the guide supplied with the set to get the specified depth in that chain area. If i had time to put it on a bridgeport I probably would have had it machined out but I wasn't able to do that with this one.

SBC sets are also sold by the 10,000's not 15-20 at a time... Marc told me he would get me a price this week.

I heard back from Marc today, here is how he wants things done.

"I want to have at least 75% paid before starting production to cover many of the expenses so I am not out of pocket too much. I do not want to hold peoples money while trying to get enough people together. It's up to you but here's what I am thinking.
During the initial sign up, buyers pay 25% to show that they are truly interested
After the designated number of buyers has been reached, they pay another 50% to you
All money would be refundable until this point should not enough people sign up or too many back out
Once all the money is collected, you send the funds to me and I will get started on making the TC sets"

I can set up a paypal acount specifically for the group purchase, because marc doesn't want to be handling money until production starts.
