Is it common for them to be replaced when a motor is rebuilt? Or are they only replaced if they are bad?
Are lifters generally replaced during a rebuild?

Not to drag up an old post, but I just checked out the lifters in the 92 (previous owner ran Mobil 1 after 30k miles, and I continued using it after I got it) and I have to say the lifters are incredible looking. Most lifters from other DOHC run w/ standard oil have scratches like crazy on the sides where they slide in the bore. Each one of mine barely have any at all. All I can say is I am impressed.-60v6's 2nd Jon M.

I'm pretty sure you're not supposed to replace the lifters if you're not replacing the cam, and if you replace the cam you MUST get new lifters. So if you're not pulling the cam, leave the lifters alone unless they look damaged.

It doesnt apply to DOHC because the pressure isnt as great on them as it is for the pushrods. Large area = less wear. You can replace lifters without replacing a cam though...if you couldn't that would be retarded for when a lifter collapses.Ben
