Well it is my car he wants to race

When i do, i wont have my rims on, and alot of other stuff. I hope to have my UD pulley soon, and i will have a hypertech chip in (i know it might not be the best, but it was free).

I will soon have ram air if i ever sell my system. 8mm wires, and my rapid fire #8 will be back in. I also have a k+n, cut and gut box, 180 tstat.

Not much, but ben you hear anything about that 70MM TB yet

I will have to hit you up about the PnP upper and lower intake too.

Just face it. A 3.4 is unbeatable. Just ask Aaron...he will tell you.

Not really, but adding a turbo will barely get you by a 3.4, and that is with your current mods and 12psi and a 5-speed.
Wow...thats pretty funny. Adding even the stock TGP turbo setup to the 3100 with the stock TGP boost should make it easily beat a 3.4 I would think. Turning the boost up to 12psi with the stock TGP turbo setup on a 3100 would put it easily at 250hp or more. So a stock 215hp 3.4 is gonna keep up???

My Turbo 3.1, with just the mods in my sig (about $150 worth) pulled 182whp on Saturday. Thats ~227 crank horsepower. Thats 6.5psi boost (according to my autometer boost gauge), and it was on a dyno, so there wasn't much cold air at all going to the intercooler. Not to mention it has MUCH more torque than a 3.4. So it would take a 3.4 off the line, and the 3.4 would never catch up. And I have an automatic. I have no doubt I could take a stock 3.4 auto (probably even a 5 speed) to AT LEAST 90mph. But I would probably pull all the way until the 3rd gear rev limiter.

I was assuming it was a 3.1, not a 3100. How much more power did the 3100 have over the 3.1? You guys talk about them like they are night and day to each other.

And also, max power doesn't mean faster.4 has an And it is 210 for a stock Z34 5-speed. Max power is just how much you make max. The 3.advantage over the 3.1 in where past 4000, we are making 180hp all the way to redline. So we have 3000rpm of 180 crank hp minimum. But it still climbs to 210 at 5500, holds that to around 6500, then drops slightly to 7000. Now I know a lot of this is debatable, but still.

The turbo 3.1 has 205 crank hp, so 5 less. But again, this is max. The TGP never gets a max and holds it, it reaches max at 5500, but then drops off HARD to 6000. True it keeps building power from idle to 5500, but never does it hold 180 crank hp for even 2000 rpm. I have driven both, and rode in Lukes TGP and watched him at the track, where I beat him by about a half second. The TGP is not faster than a Z34, especially after 40. Off the line the Z gets slaughtered no doubt, but around 40 is where they pass. The TGP is a fun car and has a much more readlily available aftermarket, but overall the 3.4 has the highest potential.

As for the 3100 though, I am clueless. I have never seen how they react to boost, and I have never raced one.

            They are.

I've floored my mom's Euro (before I got my Z), and I've floored my grandpa's 2001 Century. I can say without a doubt the Century would beat the crap out of my mom's Euro.

I can understand that it would be a bitch to ever get a 3.1 up to LQ1-ass-beating stats, but a 3100 wouldn't be as hard. You really just need to raise the top end a lot. Try retarding the cam timing (retard raises top-end right?) and see how that does. That and a 70mm TB could net some gnarly results... mm... now I want to play with my mom's Lumina.

But yeah, you're not gonna beat your DOHC friend with $700. But look on the bright side: pushrod 60v6's have better sounding exhaust!

Nah prolly won't beat him, he plans on modding his car, so far i figured i'ma spend close to $1000 on my stuff, thats for 62mm upper/lower manifolds, don't see a 72mm anywhere, 62mm TB, UD pulley, Custom Grind Cam, and new Dogbones. I figure i'll keep him on his tip toes at least! lol I'm checkign with a local shop that does cnc work for performance mods tomorrow might get off cheaper with having them do the work. Then i could do 70mm probably!

                  Thx stoney.

Damn they raised c/r like .7!!!

Don't put a 70mm TB on a 3100 or 3.1 until the engine has other mods first. You will lose any hope of low end. there will be no low end. a 3.4 would kill you off the line. A 70mm TB on a 3.4 hurts low end, and I think the 3.4 breathes a little more than the 3.1.....

Aaron have you ever driven any of the pushrods? They have crazy low end (compared to a DOHC, even a 5-speed).

Do your ram air idea with 70mm and let us know how it goes.

Have you ever driven a 5 speed DOHC? Low end is only good for cruising...otherwise you skip the bullshit and launch it where you can still grab and go. Some 3.4 DOHC autos have more low end punch than others stock. Some suck ass, others would challenge the 3.1. I have a 3.1 auto and a DOHC 5 speed...and the 3.1 has head work, cam, porting, tuning...and it will get its ass handed to it by the cutlass without even trying.

Of course Horsepower doesn't lie. The difference between a 3.1L and 3.4L is too great to ignore. Stock for stock a 3.4L will always win. I think a heavy ass Grand Prix GTP fulley loaded will even beat a bare bone 3.1L Cavalier. Maybe? Who knows.

Just put that 3100 on juice and go for glory.

i will never understand why evryone says a 3.1 car will beat a 3.4 car in lowend. learn how to drive, u can't just smash the gas in your 3.4, u have to raise the rpms, brake torque it and let off the brake when u want to launch

Both being auto, yes, the DOHC W body will beat the 3.1 J body. The 5 speed 3.1 will give it a good run though but will only come close to some DOHC W bodies, walked on by others.
