To clarify... The gap between the shim and the seat is about .022 It would be the exhaust valves on cylinders 1 and 6. The valve stems are also sticking up about .022 beyond the retainer, which is less concerning.
I'm gonna pull both exaust valves again and dremel the inside of the locator to get a flush seat, but I though others may want to know if you encounter 99 heads, or something was up when these valve guides were being pressed into the heads on the line...

I'm not saying you made it up. I was referring to the webpage. I may be missing something, but I didn't see anything saying it was for anything specific. Is it a generic part?

Why would I make something like that up? That is what I have here for the newer heads. Its thicker so its like a .015 shim compared to the copper/brass shim used on the other heads.

A shim with a rise in the ID (to hold the spring from the inside) is a locator (like the brass pieces earlier). A cup is shim with a lip on the OD that holds the spring in....Originally posted by torq455haha!!! that's halarious!!! now, how do we know that will work? and what a locater, the valve seat?

i wasn't 100% sure what to do about shims, but thanks for helpin me outOriginally posted by AaronGTRUm... excuse me for being a jerk but I hate repeating myself ten times...Originally posted by Synok i have the crane 272 and lifters, i have 2000 gen III heads, i will have lift over .500, since my heads are 2000, i am thinking i won't be able to use the ls6 valve springs, or maybe i missed that i could. what do you guys recommend?
...YES! You can use LS6 springs. That what we've been talking about in this thread the entire time. You can use them on stock 3x00 heads and run up to AT LEAST .550" of valve lift safely. I have 2000 heads with LS6 springs, LS1 shims, and I'm running .526" lift.
I wish people would read the rest of the thread.
I agree with sappy on the spring shims too... 5 thousandths of an inch is very small. Thats normal tolerance for a part like that to even get it to fit over the guide. I highly doubt it's going to cause an issue.

Makes no sense to me considering valve spring shims that sit on top of the spring seats (which are there so you don't gouge the aluminum) aren't right up against the valve guide. I haven't heard of any chatter issues with them. I gotta go to the machine shop tomorrow anyway so I will ask them what they know on this subject. I cannot believe that .005" is going to cause an issue with metal shavings or shatter. There is side loading on the valve guide but even that inst a lot of movement to be transferred to the spring.
