Valvetrain noise after cam swap

Don't beat the living dog crap out of it, but do get on it enough to get some good oil pressure going, unless it sounds like it's not mechanically right. I don't mean to be a wisenheimer, but it does sound like a 3400 that I heard that got timed wrong on the timing chain. The dot on the main gear is pretty small, and I don't mean to insult you in any way, but are you 100% the timing chain is set right? I have been wondering that for a while, but didn't want to down play your mechanic skills any. I would just rather like to rule that out for my own piece of mind while I try to think of possible solutions since I can't just drive to your house like I can Bens.

once i get some more coolant in there ill git it another go. no romping down the street as it has no plates on it.

When I have dug out a car that sat for a long while, I have had to let it warm up, then take it down the road and give it a really good romping on to get the lifters to quiet down.

they werent loose and sloppy they were actually pretty snug. the ones i measured with the valve closed opened a little but that was with the full lifter so there should have been some preload.
might just need some more run time i only ran it like 5 minutes due to the lack of antifreeze in it.
i imagine it takes more than 5 minutes to fill up lifters on a stock engine.
superdave any idea on how long it took your lifters to fill up with those springs in them

You ran the stock pushrods and the noise was still there? You had preload?

i replaced the one lifter with another one with the same springs in it, it was one of the 7k original ones which still had clean oil in it.
the rest were all the ones that i swapped the springs in so they got cleaned out good.
the few lifters i took out and took apart the other day were full of oil and everything looked good and normal.

check the checkvalve in that lifter.. it might be stuck or something...

still sounds like shit. the noise didnt change after i took the top end off for the 4TH time.
use stock pushrods to see if that helped as in trying to see if the ones i had were a smidge too long no change.
i need more antifreeze to let it run a long time, with the amount of times ive had to take this thing apart the amount of antifreeze is dwindling down.
i did let it run for 5 or so minutes after i found out i forgot to hook the hose up to the pcv valve and was wondering why the car wouldnt stay running. after that was solved it ran good idled solid at 900, revved it up to like 2 or 3k put it in gear to get some load on the engine brought it up to 1.5-2k then let it idle as the oil burned off the head and exhaust cause the stupid valve cover did sinch itself down all the way.
once i get more antifreeze ill try that and some mystery oil for the hell of it. but other than this im kinda annoyed and pissed at the whole thing so if anyone has any brilliant ideas that will help me out please say so cause the car is real close to going buh-bye

yeah i confused myself on that one too. i went to inches on the longest pushrod from the custom cam cause the caliper i got only went to 6 inches on the ruler part so i added the .2222 to it it didnt go that high in mm.
the rest of the lifters filled up they were pretty solid like with oil.Last edited by geldartb; 05-06-2008, 04:24 PM.

Well....
.236-.17=.066
5.708+.066=5.774=146.6mm short rod
.236-.18=.056
6.062+.056=6.118=155.39mm long rod
so um they could be ever so slightly too long on the intake causing the lifters to never get a chance to pump up... but I'm not a genius on this and I didn't measure it myself... and you jumped back and forth between mm and inches... damn you threw me off there.... I would stick with .000 far in inches its more accurate.
If they are not pumping up, check to see if you get ANY preload with a stock set of pushrods, even if it is just barely any I'm curious to see if that would help and make the noise go away. You can do a stock pushrod test and if you get preload and then put it together and it shuts it up, then you can talk to Ben about getting ones the right length, or ever so slightly shorter than what he gave you, thats an easy swap if that fixes the noise. And remember that lifter started to pump up when we were just running the oil pump so its gotta be something related to preload somehow.
Also correct me if I'm wrong, short rod is intake, long is exhaust right?Last edited by 3400-95-Modified; 05-06-2008, 03:57 PM.

yeah thats different.
ok im gettign screwed over by ONE lifter on the number 3 cyl. its not filling up ill have to run downstairs cause i cnat remember whether its intake or exhaust. its the 3rd one in fromt he pass side of the car left side if your standing in front
the rest of the lifters were rock solid. the one i took out is totally collapsed ill post a pic later
Jon knows as well as i do the back 3 are getting plenty of oil as we found out that day.
i got the measurements from my car now i got to get the ones from the old block to compare.
i can honestly say now i can do a lim gasket in like 3 hours prob less now.
ok on to the measurements
.17 inches on the intake 4mm
.18 on the exhaust on my engine with the cam in it. 4.5mm
149mm on the short pushrod
6.1250 on the long 155.57500 millimeters
-------------------------------------------------------------------
6mm on both intake and exhaust from the deck to the top of the lifter.
154 on the long
145 on the short for stockLast edited by geldartb; 05-06-2008, 03:47 PM.

yeah told you it was my mcgyver measuring skills although i didnt have the paper clip so i coukdnt finish. ill pick up a set of calipers today.
the tapes good for when im cutting wood not engine parts.

calipers will yeild you a better measurement, since 3/16ths is rather vague... to say the least when it comes to that height
